چکیده

An extended spectral domain approach (ESDA) is applied to evaluate the scattering parameter of laterally slotted coaxial antenna for hyperthermia treatment. The results calculated by ESDA are in good agreement with that by Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation. Computational labor of the present method is far lighter than that of FEM, and the method is suitable for the iterative computation that is required for the optimization of antenna design. The present method can afford to consider the effect of the metallization thickness in the outer conductor.

Coaxial Slot Antenna Design for Microwave Hyperthermia using Finite- Difference Time-Domain and Finite Element Method

Hyperthermia also called thermal therapy or thermotherapy is a type of cancer treatment in which body tissue is exposed to high temperatures. Research has shown that high temperatures can damage and kill cancer cells, usually with minimal injury to normal tissues. Otherwise, ablation or high temperature hyperthermia, including lasers and the use of radiofrequency, microwaves, and high-intensity...

Study on Interstitial Microwave Hyperthermia with Multi-slot Coaxial Antenna

This study focuses attention on interstitial microwave hyperthermia, which is a popular medical procedure for treatment of pathological human tissues containing tumors. In the paper, the 2D finite element analysis is used to compare the models of the coaxial antenna with one, two and three air slots. The implemented models are based on the wave equation in the TM mode coupled with the Pennes eq...

Heating Performances of Array Applicator for Interstitial Microwave Hyperthermia: Numerical Simulation and Clinical Trial

INTRODUCTION In recent years, various types of medical applications of microwaves have widely been investigated and reported [1]. In particular, minimally invasive microwave thermal therapies using thin applicators are of a great interest. They are interstitial microwave hyperthermia [2] and microwave coagulation therapy (MCT) [3] for medical treatment of cancer, cardiac catheter ablation for v...

Computer simulation and temperature measurement for MR hyperthermia therapy using coaxial-slot antenna

Introduction Hyperthermia therapy is commonly used for tumor treatment that already has been widely investigated. The principle of hyperthermia therapy employs the clear difference in heat sensitivity of normal cells and tumor cells at 42°C to 43°C and above. This difference is used for selective killing of only the tumor cells. Recently, hyperthermia therapy combined with magnetic resonance im...

Input Impedance Characteristics of Coaxial Slot Antennas for Interstitial Microwave Hyperthermia

In this paper, a transmission-line type of input impedance model originally developed by King et al. [4] for the insulated dipole antenna embedded in a homogeneous dissipative medium is extended to the case of insulated coaxial slot antenna. Physical construction of the latter indicates the presence of additional current path(s) inside the feed line, which shall lead to the shortening of its re...
